Keeping your kids entertained on your wedding day.

One thing that some couples getting married don’t always think about is how to keep your kids entertained so that you can enjoy your wedding, and they can be happy too.  Your wedding day can be stressful enough without having to keep your kids focused for photographs, seeing family, being quiet during dinner, etc…  The thing that some couples forget is that kids need to be active and entertained so making them sit in a room while Mom has her makeup done and Dad is calming down with his friends isn’t always the best solution.  Here are some ideas you can use to help keep your kids entertained and happy so that family photos and wedding reception speeches aren’t interrupted.

Getting ready:

Girls:

If you have a little girl/girls, one thing you can do is buy bathrobes for girls and have them pretend it’s a spa day.  Not only will it keep her happy and feeling like she is part of the wedding, but she’ll also look amazing for walking down the aisle, being the flower girl and she’ll get to show off her hair and nails to everyone at the wedding.  By treating your little girls like they are adults and letting them participate in the wedding preparations, they can feel like they are part of the day and an adult.  You’ll love that they are usually better behaved since they feel like adults and they’ll love getting to feel grown up.

Boys:

If you have little boys, don’t forget to help them feel like a grown up as well.  Sitting in a room with a bunch of grown up men smoking cigars, drinking brandy or sitting in tuxedos all day isn’t fun.  Some things that you can do to help them feel like Dad is to order chocolate or bubble gum cigars, substitute apple cider or make a dark colored fruit punch and let them imitate the grown ups with them.  Although smoking isn’t good and we don’t condone it, if that is what the grown ups are doing then for this one day candy cigars can be acceptable as long as you tell them that they are for special occasions only.

During the wedding, photographs and reception:

One of the hardest things to do during your wedding is to enjoy it and to have your kids at the perfect energy levels as well as entertained so that you and your kids can enjoy your wedding day.  Here are a few things that you can do to help keep them burning energy, entertained and under control the entire day.

Set up a camera photo hunt.  One thing that kids love is to take pictures.  By having them first watch the photographer and have him or her teach them a couple of tricks on taking good pictures, you can then send the kids around the venue with a list of things they have to find and take a picture of while you and your husband or wife have your private and wedding photos taken.  Not only will your kids be excited about taking pictures like a professional, but when it’s time for family photos they may enjoy posing because they know about light, etc… now as well.

Find a venue that has an extra room or hallway. One thing that is perfect during the wedding reception is to have a Nanny or someone from the venue staff be tasked with watching the kids and keep them running.  By setting aside another room at the venue with a TV, interactive game or even just high energy running and playing games, your kids will not only sleep through the speeches and toasts instead of interrupting them, but you’ll enjoy the words that are being said about you and your partner.  The kids will also be ready to eat since they were just running which means they may not be as picky about the food.  One thing to make sure you don’t forget is to test out the noise levels in the room to make sure they don’t carry into the room for the wedding reception.

Setting up a separate party for the kids.  One other option which isn’t extremely expensive is to buy a kids birthday party kit and have a mini party in the other room for the kids.  You can hire entertainment for a while, serve the wedding cake on themed plates and have their food served separately.  This way the adults can have the wedding party and dinner in one room and the kids can use the other if they are getting to loud.  Then when it is time for dancing and noise, the kids can rejoin the adults afterwards.

There are tons of things you can do to help make a wedding where the couple has kids more enjoyable for everyone.  You can buy kids robes to help your girls feel like adults, set up high energy games to wear the kids out so that they sit quietly through or sleep through the toasts and speeches and you can also set up games to make things like taking photos more interesting.
